When Life Closes In

Ξ May 14th, 2012 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast |

When Life Closes InRecently, I have been going through a number of health issues;  mostly due to high blood pressure and the problems it causes, plus a medicine conflict that about shut down my kidneys.  This landed me in the hospital for a week, and as a result, I have discovered that I have had a minor stroke.  My eyes also were affected, and so goes the existence in these earthly vessels we call bodies.  Still, amidst it all, I can see the wonders of God at work!
One of those wonders was how He speaks to us through His Spirit, when we are quiet and listen.  His gentle voice is amazing at healing our hearts and
curing our worries.  He is trying so hard to tell us just how much more peace we can have if we only trust HIM.
That word:  TRUST.  Five letters.  In scrabble it’s only worth 5 points; yet, we seem to cling to it, refusing to let it go when help is at our very doorstep!
Luke 12:35-40
“Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. 36“Be like men who are
waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that
they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks.
37“Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he
comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them
recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them. 38“Whether he
comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds them so, blessed
are those slaves.
39“But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what
hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be
broken into. 40“You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour
that you do not expect.”
In trusting God, we are to be ready to stay fast amid the turmoil and
troubles,  Satan will try to sway you from the path, and discourage you from
fulfilling the ministry that has been appointed you.
I know I will see Jesus, either when He comes or when He calls me to HIM,
and that is what matters most to me.

This Mother’s Day Edition of Gospel Music Roundup is in direct appreciation for Mom.

Always there when we fall

Ready to pick us up or steer us clear of trouble.

They feed us, clothe us, protect us,

They feel our pain when we hurt,

and always seem to know what’s best for us.

Mothers are ALWAYS RIGHT:

Even if you disagree, you know they are.

I recall in the Film, “The passion of the Christ” the scene where the young Jesus trips and falls And it was Mama who came running to hold him.

More power than ten thousand angels…

More love than mere man can fathom.

Our comforter when we sorrow,

our nurse when we are injured

Our protector when the world comes against us.

And finally, at that dreadful moment when they must LEAVE us, their concerns are not for themselves, but for the ones they leave behind.

Mamas.

Emissaries of our Lord,

Our Savior and our King.

Used mightily of Him,

Yet seem to be so successfully clandestine that we never fully realize how much they are there, until they aren’t there anymore.

Take the time to hug your Mama today, even if it’s just over the phone.

If she has gone on ahead of you, take the necessary steps to ensure you see her again on the other side.

It’s what she would have wanted,

And you know, she’s always right!

Yes, Lord!

Ξ April 22nd, 2012 | → 0 Comments | ∇ comments, Gospel Bluegrass, Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast, Uncategorized |

yes_lord Oftimes, you may hear the voice of God speaking to you.  It may come at the time of your conversion or when you’ve been saved for 60 years;  The time frame does not matter.  What matters is that when you hear the Voice of God calling you to a task, that you say, “Yes, Lord!”  Yet, all too often, when WE (myself included) hear that calling, we tend to say “Yes” with our mouths, but internally we start formulating a list of things that have to “fall into place” before we can undertake this mission the Spirit has placed on our heart.  We have to finish school.  We have to get our finances in order.  We have to wait until the kids are older and out of the house.  The list goes on and on, and that list is not a bucket list, it’s an “Excuses list.”
No, I am not telling you to shirk your responsibilities;  I’m telling you to prayerfully consider where you stand, and ask yourself if you are reacting on faith or in doubt.
The reaction of FAITH will cause the believer do everything within their power to move forth with the cause that God has given them.  The reaction of DOUBT will find excuses, and live a guilt-ridden life for not doing what they know they are to do.
You may squelch that guilt, or moreso, you may be desensitized to the imperitive nature of the task by an onslaught of graphic movies or negative media.  But, when all is quiet, you still hear it.  And, when you pray, it gets a little louder;  and yet again you (we) stall.
Most of us have heard the phrase, “When God closes a door, He opens a window.”  Those are the people who are neglecting the tunnel, or as in the case of the ‘Paralytic born of four,” in the second chapter of Mark, the ROOF!:
1When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. 2And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. 3And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. 4Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. 5And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? 9“Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? 10“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11“I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” 12And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”
Those four men, who remain nameless in scripture, still illustrate my point;  When you know what you must do for the Lord, act.  Don’t pause, don’t stall…  other people’s eternities are at stake, as we are a witness to His power!

Goodbye, Earl, Goodbye

Ξ April 7th, 2012 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Gospel Bluegrass, Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast, Uncategorized |

Goodbye, Earl, Goodbye! This week, in tribute to a great man of the banjo and a friend of the faith, we say goodbye to Earl Scruggs.

Life passes through a series of stages; You go from Growin, to Grown, to groan, to growin’ old…
If you try to skip any of the above, you will be required to go back and repeat it.
Some folks try to stay in stage one, some try to head straight for stage 4; but as with any stage, your acts define when it is over.

Earl Scruggs decided to stay in the “Growin’” stage, ever growin’ ON the stage.  His life consisted of his music, always trying to bring Banjo into every genre.

We will not attempt to make a biography nor an anthology, here, just a salute to the man and his instrument, showcasing some of the people who try to emulate the man.

Saved by His GraceEphesians 4:11-16

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,  for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;  until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.  As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;  but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,  from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”

How often it is, we set out to do the work of the Lord; that which HE gave us to do, and wind up feeling like we’ve been strung out and stranded, because our old, sinful nature wants to rear its ugly head and shout out, “I deserve BETTER than this!”

The truth is, we’ve already been given that which is better than we will ever hope to have of our own frail, human thinking or power.  We have the “Hope Of Glory,” that being eternal life with Jesus in Heaven.  This, of course, being if you have indeed accepted His free gift of salvation.

I have a friend whose yard sustained some wind damage, many years ago.  One of his favorite trees had suffered a bad split, where two main branches had joined.  Not wanting to give up on this tree, my friend set about to try to save it, by using a cable hand-winch to pull the lower, weaker branch back up to meet it’s larger brother branch where the two had split, then covered the injury with pruner’s patch to give it time and space to heal.  As time went on, his work called him to another town, and his house and yard pretty much set empty for a number of years.  For every storm that came upon us, that cable held.

Upon one of his return visits, he invited me over to take a look at his tree.  Looking at the area where it had once been broken, we could clearly see that the branches stood strong and true, but had grown so much over the years that the winch was now broken, and its cable enveloped by the branches!

We had done what we could for the little tree;  but our little part became overpowered by God’s own design and healing.  WE did not heal the tree, but had only helped it along in a way that came alongside God’s plan and design.  Even moreso, we had tried to help TOO MUCH, as God’s healing far exceeded that which we had attempted.

In Luke 12:27, Jesus says, “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.”

Yes, we may feel lost and alone;  we may feel parched and thirsty in a foreign land;  we may feel that (as we attempt to the will of the Father) we are alone and even conspired against, or that our little bit of influence is of no difference in God’s plan.  Yet, we each must realize that God’s plan involves and utilizes us as he sees fit, as each has need, and as His Will calls for.

Let us yield to His service, today and everyday, knowing that our own limitations are destined for His Glory.

Walking Closer

Proverbs 3:5-6 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.Obviously, God must reign supreme in your life. Above all others, above all possessions, above all interests, above offices and organizations. Yet, the Author of all creation desires a closer relationship with you than you ever dreamed possible! Yet, you may be asking yourself, “How do I draw closer to God?”

Proverbs 3:5-6

New American Standard Bible (NASB)
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart

And do not lean on your own understanding.

6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He will make your paths straight.

And in Psalm 37:4, it reads,

“Delight yourself in the LORD;

And He will give you the desires of your heart “

So, if you are delighting yourself in the Lord and trusting Him with all your heart, it only stands to reason that the desires of your heart are, in fact, being met! When doing His Will, and knowing Him better, gives you great joy, then we can rejoice in knowing that our lives, our hearts and actions are aligned with the center of His will.

Suffice it to say, I personally think the aspect of “Making our paths straight” has some deeper implications than many will give it; Straighter does not always mean easier. And, not many want to accept this. Yet, the shortest distance between any two points is a straight line, and sometimes that straight line leads over mountains and through valleys. All too often, staring down a straight line leads to a “vanishing point,” beyond which we can see no further. Yes, sometimes a straight line is hard, but He is there, leading us on that way. He knows what we can or cannot handle, He knows where He is leading us, and this is where our faith is tested at its highest level.

By “Walking Closer” we keep God in sight. And God has promised ;

Joshua 1:5 “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. “ (also found in Hebrews 13:5 & Deut. 31:6 )

Face HIS Book

Ξ February 20th, 2012 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast |

Face His Book, The Word Of GodThere are several social media outlets online that vie for your time-  and a good many of us spend a lot of time on them, myself included.  Not to throw a guilt trip out there on anyone, but in my bible studies the other day, I came across this verse, in Exodus chapter 20, verses 4-5;

“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…”

It’s important to note, here, that God is not “Jealous” in the way that most people would describe jealous, which is actually closer to envious, in definition.  He doesn’t want another person’s house, or boat, or car, or any other possession.

what we have here, is a different use of the word “jealous” when God says He is jealous. What He is jealous of belongs to Him;  and that is our worship and service – and our TIME.  They belong to Him alone, and are to be given to Him alone.

So when our time spent on non-essential activities exceeds our time with Him or in His Word, we are in essence telling God that we have more important things to do.

We need to strike a balance, of seeking to worship the Lord in all we do-  Not through useless whining and complaining, but using our time to face His book, and to say, “Yes Lord, this temple of my body is Thy Space!”

A Gospel Valentine

Ξ February 13th, 2012 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast |

I cross my heart, this love is realI John 15:13, it says,”Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”

The one speaking those words is Jesus, Himself.  He came here to give;  Give of Himself, His Power, His blood, His Love.  He had it all in heaven;  sitting at the right hand of God the Father, He had the honor and the glory, but knew that He had to make the journey here, to earth, to demonstrate the purpose of praise of our Heavenly Father, and the relationship He desired with us.  No greater love has the world known than that.

Philippians 2
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,  make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,  who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

He didn’t regard equality with God something to be grasped;  To Christ, the potential was there to think himself too high, too important, to take on such a task.  But He set aside that power to come here to earth for the sake of all mankind, giving His life to save “Whosoever will” ( Romans 10:13 )

The blessings of the Saints are what keep us going! In case you haven’t noticed, Gospel Music Roundup hasn’t had any current podcasts for the last couple of months, now.

The problem was a financial one.  There are fees that we pay, in order to be able to play much of our song library, and those fees went up dramatically this year.  Enough that I had to negotiate a way to keep the current podcasts on the ‘air’ and promise not to make more until they were paid.  Nasty people, but our kingdom is not made up of them.

Thanks to God working in some mighty ways, we are back in motion, and this podcast is a great one to start the year out.  You see, I got to thinking;  Just how many people out there are going through similar stresses and worries in the promises they make to the Lord for Ministry.

Whether it’s your pastor, the director of the food bank, Crisis Counselors, or the local Christian radio station, there are a great number of people at work to minister to whomever needs it;  willing servants of His love and by His grace!  Some of us are even too ‘self-sufficient’ (read that, “Proud”)  to ask for help when it’s needed.  Yet time and again, people have told me not to deny the grace and their blessing of the Lord.

I mean, How can you expect God to bless the work of your hands when your hands are not doing the work He’s given you to do?

For those of you who have waited for this new podcast, thank you.  for those of you who have never been here before, WELCOME!  As far as it is in my power, this problem should not arise again, as I do not want to be caught unaware twice!  Praise God, though;  The increase in fees was because the audience has increased sufficiently through the sharing of streaming media.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.  But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

Prayers for rebuilding Joplin's homes and hearts

It has now been 7 weeks since a Tornado ripped through Joplin, changing the lives of people all across the country.  No, Joplin is not back to “Normal;”  If you consider “normal” to be anything like it was before the devastation, it never will be.  We are not back to normal, but we are back to work.
Back to work rebuilding our own lives and the lives of our friends and neighbors.  Back to work making plans to rebuild.  But most of all, back to work showing the Love of God through actions towards our fellow man.
Those of us who know Christ know the hand of protection that was on the great majority of us all.  Yes, there have been losses, and tears come to my eyes when I think of those whom I will never see again nor have the chance to share the wonders of God with them, but what is amazing is to see the people who have diligently worked on into this summer with its blazing heat and humidity.
If God has placed it on your heart to help, by all means contact me and I will connect you with a church or organization that can use what you have to offer!

I have said it before, and it bears repeating:

There are those who would change us, and actively try to do so.

But even if they were to crash into all of our buildings, tear down every monument, burn every flag, come from every land and try to take over our government and label us with every derogatory term imaginable, the interminable spirit of America, ONE nation, under GOD, will never die.

God Bless America, my home sweet home!

Amy Carver,

Ivy Ortman &

Gracie McCaul

They have been singing together since the three were little girls.

This trio performs together as “Faith”, of Joplin, Missouri.

In 2003 they recorded their debut album, “Keep the Faith” in Nashville, Tennessee, and in June of 2005, they released their 2nd album called “Sweet Sunday Morning”. It was recorded in Joplin, Missouri.

In October 2005, Rachel Worthington started singing with the group, and together, these ladies love having the opportunity to minister through song and music.

Gospel Music Roundup – Fathers Day

Ξ June 15th, 2011 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Music, Podcast, southern gospel podcast |

Romans 8:15 Abba, Father~!
Romans 8:14

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.   15  For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if  children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Yes, it’s a day to Celebrate the Father!

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.Mark 8: 34

And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35“For whoever wishes to save his life will
lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37“For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Gospel Music Roundup and Signature Quartet

Ξ June 8th, 2011 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Artist Spotlight, Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast |

Nehemia 8:10- Then he said to them, "Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."Often I will be putting together the songs for this show, and the Lord kind of “Takes over”, putting everything in the place it needs to go- a most awesome experience, to be sure. But this time, it was so much MORE than that! I truly FELT the ministering of the Holy Spirit in my heart throughout this cast.

Please allow me to introduce you to the ministry of the Signature Quartet, Carthage Missouri.

Here are the voices and sounds of Signature Quartet:
Tenor: Darrel Morlan
Lead: Jackson Knight
Baritone: Nathan Terry
Bass: Jason Percy

Piano: Adam Rasmussen
Bass Guitar: Doug Clifton
Sound Tech: John Morlan

From the group’s site, we can gather the basics of information, but it takes meeting these men to really appreciate their heart for the Lord.
Throughout the years they’ve had the privilege of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song in many different venues, from Texas to South Dakota & all parts in between, sharing the stage with such groups as:
Brian Free & Assurance, Gold City, Mark Bishop, Chuck Wagon Gang, The Perry’s, Phill Cross & Poet Voices, Mike English, The Lesters, Garry McSpadden, The Melody Boys, The Weatherfords, Legacy V, The Kingsmen, The Dove Brothers, Greater Vision, and the list goes on & on.

Locally, with Gospel Music Roundup, so much has happened recently that has kept me away from the microphone.  Satan was craftily using his darts and distractions. But when I started to record this evening, I felt God working on my heart, tuning it up and speaking to the hurts that it was hanging on to.
I didn’t just record, this time; As I say within the show, I had FELLOWSHIP! Sweet communion as God worked in me through the words of the songs.

Nehemiah 8:10- Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

My prayer, is it does the same for you! Enjoy!

Gospel Music Roundup Memorial Day 2011

Ξ May 27th, 2011 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Music, Podcast, southern gospel music, southern gospel podcast |

The Lord of all heaven and earth is Lord over Joplin, still, and loves us all

A different kind of Memorial Day, at least here in the Joplin Missouri area.

Search and rescue efforts are still underway, and the City of Joplin is just beginning clean-up efforts in response to Sunday’s EF-5 tornado and subsequent destruction.

What amazes me, and many others, isn’t the destruction, but the response of the Joplin People.

People crawled out of the rubble and went straight to the business of making sure others were alright, and pulling them out of the rubble as well. People who lost their homes, who even lost family and loved ones, set about the task of helping to ensure the safety and well being of others. You’ve seen the stories and testimonies on TV, but just how many there are doing the same thing who never even get their face in the camera or their picture on TV will astound you.

Professionals and civilians alike from many miles away jumped in their vehicles and came here, simply because they knew they would be needed. They didn’t wait for a call, they didn’t say, “We’ll go in a week or so,” they came now, and they came prepared to pitch in. Medical professionals, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Chain saw crews, heavy equipment operators and more came pouring in before the federal officials even were made aware of what had happened.

We have a God who inhabits the praises of his people, and even moreso a God that hears our cries in the midst of the storm and beneath the rubble.  No doubt, some of his children were called home, but a great many have been kept here to share in his miraculous works.

Now they need your works.  Donations are needed, and cleanup is going to take weeks.  Rebuilding will take years.  Some were hit without insurance, without resources, without Godly counsel, and it is our aim as brothers and sisters in Christ to be the body we were called to be.  Please, do your part, that being whatever it is that God calls you to do.

Clean out your garage, your closet, drive down and help or write a check;  it’s up to you to listen and obey, and to use the talents He has given you for His glory.

People can now text the word “Convoy” to 50555 to donate 10 dollars to Joplin relief efforts.

These donations are funneled through the same structure that started “Hope For Haiti” and multiple other text-to-give operations, and seems to have withstood scrutiny thus far.

The City has established the following phone numbers for people interested in donating their time or items to aid in the recovery effort:

  • Individual volunteers wanting to donate their time should call 417-625-3543
  • Volunteers wanting to donate items can call 417-625-3542
  • Volunteer groups (churches, businesses, etc.) should call 314-623-9991

Some of the tasks available to volunteers are:

  • Clean up of debris in the neighborhoods
  • Search lines to locate victims
  • Hospitality volunteers to work on campus at MSSU assisting first responders and fellow volunteers
  • A crew to help clean the police and fire building located at 303 E Third
  • Volunteers to work at City Hall and assist residents and businesses with completing the FEMA disaster assistance application
  • Sorting debris once it has been collected

Volunteers who wish to assist with clean-up efforts will continue to be staged and dispatched from the recreation center on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.

Continue to receive updates on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CityOfJoplin.

Finally, there is always the opportunity to meet with your pastor and give to the ministries of your choice.
