How Wide Is Your Path?

proverbs 16-9 a man chooses his path either in sync or out of step with the LordIt’s often said that each of us is on a journey.  While this is true, it doesn’t mean that we are all necessarily headed for the same destination.  Whether by decision or default, we are all responsible for choosing our steps, and doing so wisely.

Proverbs 16:9 - New American Standard – states,                   “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.”

We have freedom of choice;  choice to believe, choice to follow, choice to rebel and choice to even ignore.  Yet for all of our plans, there are consequences to our choices.

Before each of us is the choice of two paths, and Jesus outlined them succinctly:

Matthew 7:13-14

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

So, if the proverb is correct in saying that the Lord directs our steps, how can it be that we wind up anywhere but the narrow path?  Disobedience.  We can direct our kids on how they are to behave, yet in many cases they do not obey.  We can direct our pets to sit and stay, but without patient and consistent training the odds are they will neither sit nor stay.  A philharmonic conductor can direct the symphony, but without complete obedience, his efforts become a sham and a shame.

The Lord has given us direction.  We choose, moment by moment, whether we will follow that direction or not.  Only by faithfully listening and following will we find our steps to be in tune with the Will of God, and on that path, we MUST be, should we desire to please Him or to seek His face!

Esh Family Tribute

The Esh Family - singing gospel and spreading the good news of salvation through Jesus ChristJohn and Sadie Esh were dedicated Christians, serving God and their community with unfailing passion. Their faith permeated every area of their lives; John Esh was a man of prayer who had a passion for the Glory of God and showed it in everything he put his hands to. This vision was transfused to family, friends, and anyone who came into touch with him on a personal level.

Leading their family in supporting themselves by hard work, the family built storage sheds at home, creating quite a reputation for quality work. They were actively involved in their Mennonite community, often being first to respond to needs observed around them.

The Eshes were singing together, even when their family was still quite small. Growing, eventually, to a tribe including twelve children who loved to bless the people in their community with their songs. Soon, they produced their own albums, writing many of their own songs. During this process, Sadie became enthusiastic about distributing their music, faithfully responding to telephone and mail order requests for their CDs. Even after their deaths, it is through these recordings that they continue to bless people.

The Esh children also launched out into Christian missions, as they grew. Sadly, this also brought the Esh family their first major confrontation with the sting of death; While on one such trip to the Ukraine, Johnny Esh was killed in a snowmobiling accident. It was through this experience, the Esh family learned to see God’s love in the midst of grief.

We have this confidence- the Eshes who died now live in paradise. For the remaining family, tragedy has made both their faith and their love for God more precious than ever, envisioning their family as rejoicing in eternal bliss. Determined, not to be sidetracked by temporal pain, but to look for the beauty that is God revealed through the veil.
